Up & Down Golf

It was great to have Up & Down Golf with us this week enjoying their time here at Hallamshire. He gave some lovely compliments about the course too…

“I’ve played some really good courses and this is right up there”.

“The conditions for November – unreal. Probably the best greens I’ve ever played at this time of year”.

“If you are ever in the area and get the chance to play this course, then do it!”.

Tasker Trophy Success for Hallamshire!

The men’s Second Teams have had a very busy, enjoyable and successful golfing year with representation in several Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs competitions and the Tasker Trophy regional competition.

In the Taskers Trophy, which is an over 50's matchplay competition with a team of 7 singles matches, we entered two teams with Team A having a great run through to the quarter finals eventually being knocked out by Shirland.

Team B made it all the way to the Trophy final at Beeston Fields recently where they managed to come away with the coveted trophy. It was a fantastic result considering that there were 129 teams entered from 8 midlands counties.

A tense final against tough opposition from Brierley Forest finished 4 to 3 to Hallamshire with Stuart Hinchliffe being very cool by carefully lagging a fifteen foot putt on the last hole to par it and claim the vital winning point. A massive well done to our victorious team and all of the squad members!

For the first time ever Hallamshire also entered the SUGC 6 to 18 foursomes league. This involves four pairs playing matchplay on a home and away basis against other South Yorkshire teams. Considering this was our first venture in this very competitive but friendly competition, we finished in a very creditable mid-table position. Out of the 8 points per match available, we averaged 4 points and the two promoted teams were only marginally better - both averaging just under 5.

Fourteen fixtures with many different pairings developed a great bond between our squad members which bodes well for the future. All of our players delivered winning performances at some stage in the season but the only player with a 100% record was our promising junior Sam Peasegood who played 3 and won 3, so very well done to him.

Nigel Wensley and Andy Farthing close on Sam’s heels, with only one loss out of their five matches played.

As in previous years we entered the SUGC 6 to 12 foursomes knockout, which is three pairs per team playing off scratch. We had a commendable run through to Round 3 where we were beaten on a playoff hole by our close rivals Abbeydale. We also once again entered the SUGC 2nd Team Championships at Silkstone, where we came a very creditable 7th out of 24 teams.

During the year we've had over 45 different players represent the Hallamshire teams and everyone has commented on how much they've enjoyed it.

The Club would like to make a special mention to Neil Hessell who has done a huge amount of work throughout the year to organise all of the teams. It’s a big job to arrange everything, so Neil deserves great credit. If you are interested in representing Hallamshire in the team competitions next year then please contact Neil on nhessell@hotmail.co.uk and he will add you to the communications on this.
